Silk Studio Announces Unexpected Closure

Bishop, California – 6/24/2024 – Silk Studio, cherished center for aerial arts classes and performances in the heart of Bishop, announces with great sadness its closure after 1.5 years of operation. Despite unwavering dedication of the Silk Studio team and incredible support from the community, uncontrollable circumstances led management to make this difficult decision.

Silk Studio was an evolution of Wakeful Ascent Aerial Arts, launched by Sara Kaiser in Bishop in 2018. The first aerial silks classes took place in local spaces until a designated studio space became available in 2022.

Silk Studio was a safe space for learning and self expression. Classes, workshops, and performances have inspired and empowered individuals of all ages and skill levels, and have even attracted aerialists from afar. Silk Studio has been a place where people could explore in a supportive and safe environment. New friendships formed continually, and a deep sense of community blossomed. 100% 5-star reviews reflect the effort and care poured into this local business.

The decision to close Silk Studio was the result of significant challenges related to the rental space.

“This is a profound loss for the Eastern Sierra,” commented Kaiser. “Silk Studio was a sanctuary where people could safely explore new skills, challenge themselves, receive expert instruction, form friendships, relieve stress, and build strength and flexibility. Every day spent here was uplifting, and the positive energy was the signature of the space. I worked incredibly hard to make this all possible, and my intention was to create a space for long-term learning and play in the Eastern Sierra. It is disappointing to see such a cherished, beautiful, and enriching space come to an end, especially in a world in which it is so needed. This closure has deeply impacted many people and has placed our aerial community in a difficult position.”

The final showcase, “Moon Garden – An Evening of Botanicals & Bioluminescence,” captured the essence of Silk Studio. The event attracted a substantial crowd who were captivated by ten deeply creative and skillful performances. Highlights included soulful songs by cellist Shaun Diaz and Silk Studio owner Sara Kaiser, a mesmerizing group silks act featuring translucent moth wings, and a bold, playful trio pole dance act. It was truly a unique and unforgettable night for the Eastern Sierra community, a night that showcased not only the local talent but also the deep roots of love that reach through the Silk Studio community.

Kaiser noted, “Witnessing Moon Garden confirmed what I had been noticing in recent months at the studio. The community has become so strong in the past year – more than strong enough to make it through this setback. Our love of aerial and our love for one another will give rise to creative solutions until a new space is established.”

When asked what her future plans for the business were, Kaiser responded,

“I’ve been teaching aerial arts in Bishop for six years. Losing the studio has been a profound experience, prompting me to deeply reflect and re-evaluate my life and future direction, with singing and songwriting being a key consideration. While I do not have plans to launch a new studio, the community is actively exploring options to continue training together. My greatest hope is to see this community continue to flourish, and I look forward to witnessing what emerges next.”

While it lasted, Silk Studio made Bishop California a more vibrant, creative, and beautiful place. From beginners discovering the joy of flight to seasoned performers perfecting their craft, every moment at Silk Studio has been filled with inspiration and passion. Despite an uncertain future, the aerial community will continue to thrive in the Eastern Sierra.
