Bear Activity in Mammoth Lakes from Oct. 1 to 15, 2021

10/1, 8:53 p.m., Minaret Road/Hwy 203 – A bear cub was stuck in a large construction dumpster
marked “NO FOOD WASTE.” Inside the dumpster was a now empty bag of Doritos. The cub was freed
and reunited with the mother.
10/2, 2:55 p.m., Callahan Way – A sighting was reported of a bear with one hurt paw and her two cubs.
10/3, 1:23 p.m., Forest Trail – A bear continues to break into the upstairs portion of this residence. The
reporting party was advised to lock the door when not home.
10/4, 5:57 a.m., Main Street – A bear broke into a car. The vehicle owner was advised not to leave food
in their vehicle.
10/5, 8:46 p.m., Azimuth Road – A bear cub was stuck on the wrong side of a fence away from its
mother. Good Samaritans tried to assist by chasing the cub into traffic on Meridian. The reporting party
was advised to leave the bears alone and let them figure it out. Officers later observed the cub reunited
with its mother and sibling.
10/6, 10:36 p.m., Old Mammoth Road – A bear was attempting to access a locked dumpster and was
hazed away with a less than lethal bean bag.
10/8, 3:38 a.m., Lake Mary Road – A bear was in the lobby of a Lodge and was able to let itself in and
out through an open, upstairs door.
10/8, 7:32 a.m., Twin Lakes Road – Someone reported a bear walking through a campground…in the
woods.
10/8, 8:29 p.m., Mountain Boulevard – A small bear was standing in an open dumpster eating garbage.
The bear was hazed away, the dumpster was shut, and the owner was advised. Unfortunately, people
use the dumpsters on this street as their personal trash disposal and often don’t lock the dumpsters so
that they can make a quick getaway.
10/8, 10:04 p.m., Old Mammoth Road – A bear was trying to access a dumpster after knocking over an
open trash can filled with empty aluminum soda and beer cans. Two less lethal rounds hazed the bear
away.
10/9, 7:45 a.m., Twin Lakes Road – A bear was reported in a campground eating improperly stored food
and was already gone on arrival.
10/9, 10:56 p.m., Twin Lakes Road – A bear was in the same camp site eating food from the table. Why
is there food out at 11:00 p.m. and not in the provided bear box? Bear was hazed away with pepper
balls.
10/10, 1:57 a.m., Main Street – A bear was eating out of an open dumpster and was moved along with
pepper balls.

10/10, 9:36 p.m., Canyon Boulevard – Another open dumpster with a bear eating out of it was reported.
Officers noticed a parked truck with an open window nearby (asking for bear damage). The bear was
moved along with a less lethal round.
10/10, 11:44 p.m., Main Street – This was the same place as the night before with someone reporting a
bear eating out of an open dumpster. Officers believe someone is leaving the dumpster open
deliberately. Bear was hazed away, and the site is under observation.
10/12, 10:03 p.m., Minaret Road/Hwy 203 – The same bear cub (from 10/1) was stuck in the same
large construction dumpster marked “NO FOOD WASTE.” Inside the dumpster was a now empty bag of
Lays sour cream and onion potato chips. The cub was freed and reunited with its mother. Both were
hazed with less than lethal rubber slugs.
10/13, 2:57 p.m., Twin Lakes Road – A bear was reported in a campsite upon arrival and refused to
leave. The bear moved along on its own within 15 minutes.
10/14, 8:09 a.m., Shady Rest Road – A sighting was reported of a bear with one hurt paw and her two
cubs.
10/15, 10:59 p.m., Cliff Circle – A bear broke into the back door and then caused damage to the fridge
and oven. An online report was filed by the reporting party and Officers will investigate.
